That’s what I realized when I finally passed the screening to become a flight attendent. A lot of people don’t know this but it took me THREE tries before I got hired. So what went on during the interview? Let me share my experience.
1ST TRY: DISASTER. A complete disaster. As an achiever in school, failure was never an option. I never entertained the thought that I might fail but everything really wasn’t panning out. The problem was I didn’t know what to expect. I wasn’t in control and that made me nervous. During the interview, I was so nervous that I was shaking. I looked like a fish out of water as I introduced myself and when I was asked to come forward, I didn’t move. I was so nervous I couldn’t hear. Crazy right?! And when I did move forward, they asked me to flash a smile. I gave them a forced one that put the nail in my coffin. I literally felt my facial muscles twitching while smiling. WHAT A BAD CASE OF NERVES! Well, I failed but I did learn. NOW I KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT.
2ND TRY: I was DAMN READY. I was ready to slay the dragon with guns blazing! I KNEW I HAD IT IN THE BAG. My introduction was superb, well rehearsed. I also knew that they would ask me to come forward so I did even before they asked me to. I flashed them a charming smile I perfected the night before. BUT it still wasn’t enough, I gave 110% but still failed.. WHY? Because I was overconfident and that came across as ingenuine.
3RD TRY: I just wanted to do it one last time. I prayed and said “Lord. I trust your plan”. This time I was calm. I knew what to expect but instead of controlling it, I let it go. I wasn’t overly prepared but I was still eager. I introduced myself with flair and gave them a genuine smile. SURPRISE! They liked it and I GOT HIRED! (I mean passed the first stage of interview that is)
What I think can help you ace the interview, aside from looking presentable, is to just come across as eager/warm and NOT OVERBEARING. Aside from looking the part, you have to play the part. At that time, I didn’t know that’s one of the criteria but that’s what got me in.
WHAT A ROLLER COASTER RIDE IT WAS but it was worth it!
