LIVING THE DREAM ……DREAMS DO COME TRUE
by Dr. and Mrs. Bernardito L. Dacubor
Today, April 21 is the birthday of my unica hija, KEENA ALYSSA PRELL STREEGAN DACUBOR who dreamt of becoming a flight attendant when she was a UNIVERSITY Nursery pupil at a very young age of 4.
I and my wife have never imagined that our only girl would realize her childhood dream thus, she is now living her dream. Here, we share her story towards her dedication to become one.
Never in the family history that we had anyone working as flight attendant so we were just amazed at how the dream of our daughter would come to reality. As years went by, we witnessed her development into a confident kid joining pageants and becoming a ramp model inside and outside the school. Yes, she won in many of these pageants and her world revolved around pageantry and in the fashion industry while she was a student.
In college, she enrolled in BS in Tourism Management and continued with her passion as a ramp model, product and service endorser and a beauty pageant enthusiast. We saw her development into a fine young lady whose feet were always grounded inspite of her popularity in Cagayan de Oro City and later in Davao City.
She went through difficulties in life, as our family was devastated when our residence and most of our properties were damaged by typhoon Sendong and we had to start anew from zero. But with Keena’s strong will and determination, everyone in the family has moved on.
Most of her school years were spent in Cagayan de Oro until she left the City after her second year in College as she felt her studies and her whole life was challenged by being ignored and an object of bashings from people who became insecure of her status as a model and a beauty title holder. This was coupled with the thought that she felt the emptiness of not having me around as father as I transferred to Davao for work and she was living with only my wife. But she persevered and took things in stride by being positive all the time.
Finally, it was a painful decision for my daughter to leave Cagayan de Oro City and transferred residence and finished the last two years of College in Davao City. Things went rough at first due to adjustment in the environment but later she found herself busy in school, enjoying her passion in ramp modeling and even winning beauty titles in Davao.
Her last few weeks in school were spent having her on-the-job training as a lobby attendant-receptionist in the only 5-star hotel in Davao City. Towards the completion of her practicum, the hotel assured her of a front-desk job once she gives her nod to work in the said hotel immediately after graduation.
Days after graduation, we allowed her to spend her time to enjoy her freedom from school but she insisted of having to find a work…We advised her to report to the hotel where she was promised a job after graduation but we were surprised of her reply: I WANT TO BE A FLIGHT ATTENDANT! We never expected that she has not forgotten her dream. The first opportunity of seeing her dream came true was through a Cebu Pacific Air ad which announced the hiring of a new batch of Cabin Crew. With no trace of doubt, together with my wife, they went to Cagayan de Oro for the interview. All our hearts were beating so fast and hard as we awaited for the result of the recruitment. It was her first ever job interview. By ten o’clock in the evening all family members received a very heart arming mobile text message from Keena which read “I got the job”. Everyone was ecstatic!
The months that followed were intense. My daughter has to become independent and must live away from us for the very first time. Away from her loving mother who has pampered her from the time she was born until the time she flew to Manila for the two-month intensive cabin crew training. However, she assured us that she can do it with our support, prayers and her belief that God will always be on her side.
The rigid training for almost two months with Cebu Pacific did not happen easy for her - as we thought it could be. At the end of each day’s training, every member of the family awaited for the result. There were evenings when we became so worried as she called and cried at the end of the day telling us that she failed in either written, oral or actual test or examination. That went on for the duration of her training. Our worries somehow eased when she assured us that her failures gave her the courage to push herself to do better in the next exercises of examination. We felt how she struggled but we believed in her determination to succeed as she made us believe that she could not allow herself to come home without realizing her dream. She became more mature and she showed that with prayers and perseverance to face the challenges, she was determined to get what she wanted.
The disappointments, struggles, the sleepless nights spent by our daughter to study the voluminous modules of becoming a cabin crew, the failures and the homesickness she felt were meant to make her stronger personally and professionally. We jumped and cried for joy when our daughter called from Manila to inform us that she finally passed the training and advised us to witness her batch’s graduation. Forever, she is grateful to the Almighty God for blessing her not just yesterday but every day of her life.
Now she is enjoying her job. In less that a year of working as a flight attendant she became a regular employee last March 4, 2018 and ten days she became a LCCD or Lead Cabin Crew for the Domestic flights of Cebu Pacific Air. Furthermore, she accomplished more of what she had achieved as she is also living her dream of traveling the world for free as she gets to travel to all international destinations of Cebu Pacific Air. All these, she attributes to her positivism and her determination to succeed.
To our daughter, KEENA ALYSS PRELL Streegan Dacubor, a very happy birthday to you and we hope you spend more years working as flight attendant. WE LOVE YOU SO MUCH.
