In our last post, we enumerated the 10 roles of a flight attendant inside the aircraft. Here, we now enumerate 10 roles which are not part of a cabin crew's duties nor obligations.
1. Cargo Handler
Your cabin crew are not obliged to lift or stow your hand carry luggage unto the overhead stowage bins. They are however just obliged to lend assistance incase the passenger needs help like a PWD, elderly, a pregnant woman, an injured person, or anyone with some hindrances in lifting their own luggage. BUT if you are an able unhindered passenger, please stow your luggage by yourself. There are many reasons why all airlines do not oblige their cabin crew to stow your luggage. If you want to know the reasons why, just click here. Your carry-on luggage is your responsibility as a passenger.
2. Air Traffic Controller
Your cabin crew are not responsible for the air traffic, reason why you might not be able to land right away. Yes we know that some of you have connecting flights and so on but the cabin crew members are not the ones who tell the pilots to go on a holding position, it's the air traffic controller who does that. So please do not scold your cabin crew if you can't land right away. There is nothing they can do.
3. Ground Authorities
There are times that your flights are diverted to other airports and the cabin crew does not allow you to go down the aircraft during a diversion. Well, it is not that they do not want, but they are just following instructions from the ground authorities from that airport. So if incase your flight is diverted and your cabin crew does not allow you to leave the aircraft, do not scold them. They are just obeying instructions from the ground authorities. Your cabin crew are not the ground authorities in that airport.
Your inflight meals are all prepared right before your flight by the airline kitchen in the ground then are loaded into the aircraft. Same goes for the special meals some passengers requests for upon booking their tickets. Please do not request for something not in the flight attendant's meal choices or in the business class menu. There is also no stoves, salt, pepper, pans, and soy sauce in the galley. There are no burners, just heaters enough to heat the food before being served. Please refrain from asking for lamb chops if the flight attendant asks you if you like pork, chicken, or fish. Also, please refrain from asking the cabin crew to cook your beef the way you want it, your cabin crew are not chefs nor cooks inside the aircraft.
If a flight is delayed due to technical issues and it is taking quite some time before the aircraft is started, please do not scold your cabin crew for it. They have nothing to do with the maintenance and engineering of the aircraft. Please refrain from demanding for an explanation why the aircraft cannot start and take-off already. They too are waiting for advisories.
6. The Flash
Please do not expect a cabin crew to attend to you right away especially during meal services in a split second. If only they can play the role of The Flash during meal service, but unfortunately, that is not the case. They are also serving other passengers and the trolleys are about the size of the whole aisle so one would not be able to pass right away. Please do not expect the cabin crew to be their in a split second once you press the call button. If you need anything, there is no need to keep pressing it repeatedly if a flight attendant doesn't get to you right away. Just press it once and be patient, someone will attend to you right away, Also, please do avoid pressing it repeatedly unless you need immediate assistance due to a medical condition. Sometimes, cabin crew members take the repetive pressing of the call button as emergencies, so please, unless it's an emergency, just press it once and be patient.
When you go to a retails store that sells clothes, there are of course mannequins around that you would basically just ignore. Well cabin crew members greet you and than you for flying with them. It would not hurt if we learn to greet them back. Not that it's obliged of you as a passenger and cabin crew members are used to being snobbed when they greet, but acknowledging their presence by greeting back is also a show of good gesture too. They will not take it personally against you if you do not greet them back, but yes as part of proper manners, let's learn to greet others back too.
8. Souvenir Item Kiosk
When you borrow a ballpen from your cabin crew to sign the immigration cards, please learn to return them. No matter how much they are, these ballpens are still a cabin crew's personal item. They are not souvenir items that you can take out anytime. Yes it may just be a ballpen, but if you can be entrusted to return an item as little as a ballpen, what more with bigger items.
9. Fortune Tellers
Unfortunately, your cabin crew will not be able to answer you if you will ask them if you will make it to you connecting flight. They cannot predict that. What they would be able to provide you though is an estimated time of arrival. Again, that does not include how long it will take to disembark. Again, please take note of the word ESTIMATED. So that means it may be earlier, or it may be later. Whether you will make it to your connecting flight? Sorry but that is something a cabin crew cannot foresee, nor would be able to answer.
10. Personal Servants
Though a cabin crew is there to also make your flight a comfortable and memorable one, it doesn't mean that we ask them to do whatever we want like stowing your luggage unto the overhead bins even if you are an able passenger. They still have a primary role to fulfill which is to ensure your safety and security on board. Hence when it comes to safety, there is no such thing as "the customer is always right". Asking them to serve you food during landing is something they will not do because it will hamper your and other passenger's safety and security. It's a give and take thing at the end of the day. Yes they will make sure you enjoy a smooth, comfortable and memorable flight, but please do also listen to your cabin crew and recognize their authority on board too as this is also for your own safety.
Always remember that a comfortable and memorable flight is nothing if it is not a safe and secured one.
